Summer Garden 2010
I've not spoken of our garden much this year. It's such a wonderful thing to have! So rewarding yet it takes a bit of self motivation to get out and check on it on a daily basis. I am happy with results so far this year.
We've kept our 8x8 plot although we are playing with the idea of transitioning to a strip garden next year. We shall see. This go round we have less tomato plants with 1 early girl, 1 roma and 1 grape. We planted another cucumber although the last two years were duds. Every year we plant a green, red and yellow bell pepper plant, some kind of hot pepper and onions (still not sure that summer is the best time to start onions... I should research that.) And new to our garden this year is okra and summer squash.
Funny story. Because we have not had much success in the cucumber department, I was leary about planting another. My mom suggested we encourage the plant to grow up a trellis. The plant is huge and everyday tries to grab hold of something with it's curly tenticles. I kept seeing babies but they were just not getting bigger. EVERY day I would search for any signs of a winner. Yesterday Graham came in from inspecting the garden and was amazed at the huge cucumber. "Have you seen the size of that thing?" he asked. Well, of course I chuckled 'cause I thought he was giving the poor plant a hard time. But the kid was serious. We ran out to see and low and behold, right before my very eyes was a really big cucumber. Seriously, I don't know how in the world I missed it!!!
I'm picking grape tomatoes, squash and okra like there is no tomorrow. It's such a cool thing! To walk out one day with something green and small, then another day to find it big, colorful and edible.
I don't think I will ever get tired of gardens. They are miraculous!

Nice garden.
We've had a crazy spring, so I just got mine garden planted about 10 days ago, then (of course) I had to leave work at 10am the next Monday because there was a threat of frost. Kept watching the temperature - when it hit 35 and was still falling, I made a beeline to Walmart to get a tarp to cover my new plants and then home. Of course as soon as I got home, the temperature started rising. 36.. 38.. 40 - oh well.
As for the onions, I (aka Deni) planted 256 onions this year in a 4x4 garden bed. They are pretty hardy and can be planted before the last frost. We've had great luck with onions in the past. (Walla Walla is what we plant.)
256??? Wow, you guys will be having onions coming out your ears! Ya know, I've always been so very impressed with your garden. You guys are truly my inspiration!
Heard you had a bit of last minute snow the other day. Couldn't say I wouldn't welcome it around these parts these days. You know how it is here!!
planted 16 per square foot, but then you thin out to every other one (and use those as green onions)
Last year we used all our onions in salsa so we decided to double our onions this year so we could have some to use outside of salsa.
Yours puts mine to shame. Good job! If you keep watering the okra, it will continue to produce until the first frost. I am seriously jealous!
You have got a nice garden out there. I think a connection with plants means a connection with the nature itself.
Great Garden! I'm trying to trellis my cucumbers too. They are stubborn, lol. What a nice surprise to find that big cucumber! I'm not having much success with the red onions I planted. Only one is doing great the others are looking pretty sad.
that is just INSANE that you have a flourishing garden at the end of may. we don't even PLANT our gardens until the end of may ----and even still just getting some things in the ground as we speak (i act like i'm doing things...all my dad)
we won't get veggies until august at least....you texans! ;-)
