Pictures!

I finally got Mike to agree to get some professional pictures taken as the one request from his mother was a current family photo. I got outfits all lined up and we were ready to go then I don't know what in the heck happened. I was cranky all day and as I've mentioned before, if step-mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. It rings all too true, all too often. Before I knew it, we were bagging the professional photos and heading our way out the door for the Cannon-from-the-tripod-shots. I ended up posting all the pictures at once and Mike 'bout had a fit. He thought it was better to tease a little and only post one picture every month or so. I think he just wants these to drag on as long as possible so I'm not dragging him out for more posing. I took the pictures off so Mike took it upon himself to post the garden picture. This one was his idea and actually it's my favorite. It's a little cheesy but it's what we are all about lately. We love our garden and we are so impressed with ourselves so far. I have so much more to learn. Just reading the Berger blog is enough to hide myself in shame. But I'm learning and I'm very encouraged for next year! I had my second tomato today and well, it's the best!

So be on the lookout for more pictures. We took several shots and they all turned out pretty good considering it was a very windy day and we were all bahumbugs.

Training Update:

I've not quit! But I did have a set back. The week after my Utah vacation I started out again to jog/walk. Tuesday morning after my workout, I got this dull pain in my left hip. But it wasn't anything I'd felt before and I couldn't pin point exactly where it was or why I got it. But it stopped me from going on. I called up a physical therapy friend of mine to see if she could give me some tips. Apparently she has had some friends over twice a week to work out together and these people are moving so she needed some fresh blood. She says having people over keeps her motivated. I jumped at the opportunity. She's got a "gym" in the house with just about everything ya need. So I've pretty much got my own personal trainer and gym all for free!

Anyway, she poked and prodded my hip and went directly to the source. At least it seemed that way because it hurt! She massaged it a bit and told me what to do when it hurts. Next day it was gone! But then the next time I went out for a run it started hurting afterwards. At this point, I've not totally gotten rid of the pain. My friend told me that it should go away. She thinks I haven't stretched good enough and that I need to do some strength training. I'm way bummed because I thought I was getting better and getting stronger, then Monday I went out and about 10 minutes into warm up, my hip started hurting and I had to stop for fear that I would do some damage. It's even been hurting when I sleep on that side. I'm really sad. I've heard that some people just aren't runners. I hope I'm not one of them. I seriously think I need to see a doctor about it. Anybody got any advice? I feel like a 35 year old in a 80 year old body.In the meantime, I'm doing some strenth training and learning about better nutrition. (learning, not quite perfecting)

So that's it for the night.

Chelle. It sucks getting old,eh? You're 35, oh it's only downhill from there. (ha). I started lying about my age 4 years ago. By the way, I'm 29. You should start lying before you really forget how old you really are (grin).

Thanks for the complement, I think.

On the training front, don't give up. Remember, it's progress not perfection. Learn all you can, take advantage of all the free advice you can get from your friend. One thing that I didn't know is that you shouldn't stretch when you are cold. I would always stretch then run or ride. Just learned last week that it's better to be warm before stretching...oppps. So I changed and I stretch afterwards or after a small warm up.

Deni's taking a continuing ed running class and is learning all sorts of good stuff that she passes on. Go to specialty stores (running, bike, swim stores and talk to a real expert.) They always want to talk about their special sport and always have some little tid-bit of helpful information, even if you have to listen to some of their stories in between.

I've been having issues with my IT band on the right knee, pain comes and goes but stretching and switching things up (running/elliptical/biking seems to help).

Good luck and don't give up.

Whoa! Brett actually commented on a blog!! (He doesn't allow comments on his own blog).

I second what Brett said. Don't give up. When I started training for the triathlons this year I thought for sure that this sport was not for me. Running had been a strong point for me at one point in my life and this year it just seemed that I couldn't get a 1/2 mile into it and I was dying and hurting as well. So, I didn't train like I really should have.

Well, as Brett said, I just started a continuing ED class re: running. The instructor has run in 75 marathons. At first I thought, great, I am sitting here with a man in front of me that is a crazy runner and I've had knee surgery so I could never be where he is.

Then...he began giving a background of his running experience. He started out graduation from HS at 118 lbs. He was drafted into the military and didn't want to be a wimp, so he ate more and started lifting weights. He got up to 240lbs. A friend told him one day that if he wanted to be a 'real' man he needed to run a marathon. Then it started. He lost 100 lbs and during his efforts and continued to run.

I thought - great, he's somewhat of a success story. Then he showed us his knee. He had complete knee replacement 3 years ago. HE STILL RUNS!!! That alone gave me hope.

Chelle, you can be a runner if you want to be a runner. I don't believe it when people say that some people just aren't runners. I believe we all can be runners if we want to be. There will come a day that you can get out there and just run. Are you running on the sidewalk/road? If so, try going to a school and running laps around the playground...on the grass. That is the latest advice I have been given because I have bad knees. Apparently studies have been done using runners who run on the road and those who run on soft surfaces like grass and dirt. Texas doesn't have the trails that we are so lucky to have here, so try running on grass.

I would also suggest heat/ice. Since I cannot see you so I don't know exactly where it is hurting. You might want to try a heat pad on your hip before you head out and then when you get back stretch and then ice.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing.
