School's in session!

Today was the big day! We got all three kids off to school without any difficulties. Pancakes were made, shiny new shoes were donned, pictures taken, and not one tear shed.

Last night was pretty special. I tried to google some ideas to get the kids pumped up about the first day of school. I was inspired by Alicia's school bus cakes (which I'm going to copy this afternoon BTW!) and wanted to try some traditions of our own. Graham suggested that we write down current events and then compare them at the end of the school year. So we each got a 3x5 card and came up with 10 things. A couple of my favorites were who do we think will win the Presidential election, what is our favorite movie, tv show, song, and our guess on what the cost of gas will be next summer. The kids had a great time coming up with answers. Then we flipped the card over and each of us wrote 3 goals that we hope to accomplish this year. We didn't share the goals with each other but put them away in a sealed envelope until May. After that Mike gave each kiddo a Father's Blessing. The kids so look forward to that and I think it gives them the boost of confidence they need to get through that first day of school. Pictures of the kids with Dad.

Graham was first up and first to take off. He was reluctant to have his picture taken but we snatched one anyway. He's a big kid now, starting his first year of high school. Too cool, ya know. Seminary starts tomorrow morning at 5:45am. I'm excited for him as I think seminary is the start of building his own testimony of the gospel and the scriptures. He's not verbalized too much enthusiasm, but I think he's secretly curious and might even be looking forward to it. We are lucky to have him!

Maddie was next up. She was downstairs, dressed and ready for breakfast shortly after 6am. She even got up on her own with her own alarm. That will last maybe another day. She was cheerful and pretty darn excited to find out who all is in her class. She was very willing to have pictures taken and just can't believe she is already a 3rd grader. Maddie is so social that we have no doubts she will make new friends quickly. We braved the traffic for the first day, met with her teacher (who pretty much looks like a model) and left her smiling and meeting the classroom guinea pig.

Zack was our final drop off. He finally dragged out of bed at about 6:30a but even that was too early as his school doesn't start until 8:45a. (The school hours are really spaced out this year.) He's usually very quiet and reluctant on the first day of school but this morning he seemed calm and more confident. Our shy boy is growing up. Waiting for the teacher, he actually said he was bored. Nice. His 5th grade teacher is young and appears to be very proper and professional. Zack is our affectionate one! He's so tender and softhearted and we love him to pieces.

So now Mike and I are sitting here in the quiet house wondering what to do next. I say get to work! Lots of projects to get in over my head. Love it!

Oh, your kids are so cute! We did the school thing two weeks ago. I was the only one shedding tears. It's great to see how things are going with your family. Hope you don't mind me snooping. Have a great day!

Wow, crazy! Two different elementary schools, I assume? Enjoy all of your free, no-kid time. I don't see that happening for me for a very long time. :(
